Abstract
Data relating to 249 patients with breast cancer who had operation at the department of general surgery in National Medical Center, in the period from 1971 to 1990, have been retrospectively analysed to assess the importance of various factors in
predicting prognosis.
The median survival time was 26 months. In the overall survival rates, 5 and 10 year's survival rates were 81.6% and 67.6%, respectively. 5 and 10 years DFS(disease free survival) rates were 61.1% ad 29.4% respectively.
In the analysis of survival rate by number of metastatic lymph nodes, 41% of all patients did not have metastatic lymph node and the 5 years survival rates of none, 1~3, more than 4 positive groups were 95%, 80%, 67%, respectively(p=0.001).
In the analysis of survival rate by TNM stage, the 5 years survival rates were 94.6%, 89.3%, 67.9% at the stage I, II and III, respectively(p=0.0008).
In the analysis of survival rate by tumor extent, the 5 years survival rates of T1, T2, T3, T4 were 85%, 86%, 67%, 73% respectively and there was significant difference of survival rates between of T1 and T2 groups and of T3 and T4
groups(p=0.050).
In the relationship between survival rate and obesity by Quetelet' index at preoperative period was prognostic determinant in the premenopausal patient(p=0.0011).
In the univariate analysis, significant prognostic factors for breast cancer were number of metastatic lymph node, tumor extent and TNM stage, obesity in the premenopause. CMF adjuvant chemotherapy after operation resulted in the DFS rate
difference in
stage II, in the premenopause patient. Also, in the multivariate analysis, significant factors were number of metastatic lymph node and obesity in the premenopause patient.
